Let’s Watch Some Unnerving Murder Porn

Call of Duty: World at War is a first person shooter. It depicts actual events from World War II. The player character is a US Marine. The enemies are Japanese soldiers. The primary goal is to kill Japanese soldiers. That’s all I knew about the game before viewing the launch trailer, embedded below.

Um.

Does anyone else think something is a bit weird here?

yeah this interview seems to confirm that there's a bit of a taste gap...

" ... our flamethrower is fucking awesome. You can see the flesh burn. We built this really cool procedural technology where you can watch the uniform burn away and the flesh just char as they struggle. "

AWESOME! who wouldn't enjoy seeing someone burn to death?

    Wow.

"From the single player/cooperative side it's going to be the game that took war to a level of realism that was exciting and yet a little bit disturbing. If we get that kind of reaction, I think that's a really good thing."

Well, they definitely nailed half of that, but probably not in the same way they were hoping for. I was thinking that *maybe* there was just some ignorance on the dev team's part, that they could have been completely oblivious to the issues here and were too focused on turning out a game on time to have considered the big picture.

I found the first five minutes of the game on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eu8J-r7IRO4

I don't think I'll be able playing this title!
